The Graduate Diploma in Creative Writing invites you to explore and develop your skills in fiction, non-fiction, screenwriting, poetry and more. Throughout your studies you will gain a deep understanding of theories and histories of writing.
This degree offers intimate access to Sydney's literary life, including major literary and cultural events and institutions with which the University has close ties, such as the Sydney Writers' Festival. You will experience a constant calendar of readings, performances and community events, as well as a host of celebrated visitors in a superb research environment.

To apply for a PhD, you need to demonstrate sufficient prior research experience and capability. In most cases, you will have either: a bachelor's degree with first or upper second class honours or a master's degree performed at a high academic standard, and which includes a substantial component of research; an equivalent qualification that demonstrates research experience, excellence and capability. English Language Requirements: TOEFL - IBT score: A minimum result of 85 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing; IELTS score: A minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band; TOEFL - PBT score: A minimum result of 565 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing.

Admission to candidature to the Graduate Diploma in Creative Writing requires:
a bachelor's degree with a minimum 60 percent average calculated over the whole degree, from the University of Sydney, including a major in a relevant subject area in the humanities or social sciences, or an equivalent qualification; or
completion of the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing with a minimum credit (65 percent) average, or an equivalent qualification.
You can progress from the Graduate Certificate to a Graduate Diploma or Masters, or from a Graduate Diploma to Masters in the same subject area, after successful completion of the shorter course.
TOEFL - IBT score: A minimum result of 96 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 25 in Writing
IELTS score: A minimum result of 7.0 overall including a minimum result of 6.0 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 7.0 in Writing
TOEFL - PBT score: A minimum result of 592 overall including a minimum result of 5.0 in Writing
