The University of Sydney Bioethics program provides a comprehensive overview of the field of bioethics through interdisciplinary coursework at postgraduate level. Core units cover philosophical, sociological, and legal approaches to bioethics. Students can also pursue areas of special interest in bioethics, such as biotechnology, clinical ethics, research ethics, public health ethics, health law and mental health ethics.
The program provides a stimulating and diverse environment for learning. The academics are all active researchers with backgrounds in medicine, health law, philosophy, sociology and public health, and the program attracts students from a wide variety of professional and academic backgrounds across the health professions, the health sciences, and the humanities and social sciences.
Students can choose to enrol in a graduate certificate, graduate diploma or a master's degree. Our flexible study program also allows you to start at the graduate certificate level and proceed to the master's degree.
Courses are offered in a variety of formats to suit students who have other demands on their time. All units of study are offered both on campus (if minimum attendance numbers are met) and via online learning.

Bioethicists work in medicine, nursing, allied health, pharmacy, dentistry, public health, health law, health and public policy, science communication and related fields.

To apply for a PhD, you need to demonstrate sufficient prior research experience and capability. In most cases, you will have either: a bachelor's degree with first or upper second class honours or a master's degree performed at a high academic standard, and which includes a substantial component of research; an equivalent qualification that demonstrates research experience, excellence and capability. English Language Requirements: TOEFL - IBT score: A minimum result of 85 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing; IELTS score: A minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band; TOEFL - PBT score: A minimum result of 565 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing.

Admission to the Graduate Diploma in Bioethics requires:
a bachelor's degree from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification in the field of science, medicine, nursing, allied health sciences, philosophy/ethics, sociology, anthropology, history, law or other relevant field; or
completion of the requirements of an embedded graduate certificate or equivalent qualification.
TOEFL - IBT score: A minimum result of 96 overall including a minimum result of 20 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 22 in Writing.
IELTS score: A minimum result of 7.0 overall and a minimum result of 6.5 in each band
TOEFL - PBT score: A minimum result of 592 overall including a minimum result of 5.0 in Writing
