The group is involved in solving challenges of Modern Theoretical Physics, ranging from Quantum Information to Biophysics. Moreover, Ben Varcoe is currently performing Quantum Information based experiments in strongly coupled cavity QED systems, as well as in more fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics. We are also involved in two of the four UK Quantum Technology Hubs, NQIT and York. The discovery that quantum physics allows fundamentally new modes of information processing has required the existing theories of computation, information and cryptography to be superseded by their quantum generalisations. The Leeds Quantum Information Group conducts theoretical and experimental research into various aspects of quantum information processing, and into the implications of the quantum theory of computation for physics itself. Our main research interests include possible effects of entanglement in macroscopic systems, topological quantum computation, quantum algorithms, and experimental realizations of quantum information systems. The School of Physics and Astronomy conducts world class research in a variety of areas, including quantum information (theory and experiment); magnetism & spintronics, and superconductivity; soft condensed matter, statistical physics, and polymers and complex fluids; biophysics, bionanotechnology, nanophysics, membranes and astrophysics.
