To apply for a PhD, you need to demonstrate sufficient prior research experience and capability. In most cases, you will have either: a bachelor's degree with first or upper second class honours or a master's degree performed at a high academic standard, and which includes a substantial component of research; an equivalent qualification that demonstrates research experience, excellence and capability. English Language Requirements: TOEFL - IBT score: A minimum result of 85 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing; IELTS score: A minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band; TOEFL - PBT score: A minimum result of 565 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing.

Admission to candidature for the Executive Master of Arts and Social Sciences (2 years full-time) requires:
a bachelor's degree with a with a 60% average calculated over the whole degree, from the University of Sydney, or an equivalent qualification.
In addition, all candidates must supply:
a personal statement of no more than 500 words; and
a Curriculum Vitae focused on academic and professional achievements.
Recognition of Prior Learning
If you have completed previous studies in a related area or have relevant work experience, you can reduce the length of you studies or receive credit based on the Recognition of Prior Learning criteria below:
Admission to candidature for the Executive Master of Arts and Social Sciences (1.5 years full-time) requires:
a bachelor's degree in the Humanities, Social Sciences or Law with a minimum credit (65%) average from the University of Sydney, or an equivalent qualification; or
relevant professional experience equivalent to a Graduate Certificate.
Admission to candidature for the Executive Master of Arts and Social Sciences (1 year full-time) requires:
a bachelor's degree with honours in the Humanities, Social Sciences or Law, from the University of Sydney, or an equivalent qualification.
TOEFL - IBT score: A minimum result of 96 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing
IELTS score: A minimum result of 7.0 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band
TOEFL - PBT score: A minimum result of 592 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing
