The Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Orthodontics) provides the opportunity for you to develop skills and acquire knowledge essential for specialisation in orthodontics through a comprehensive curriculum of theoretical and clinical studies. This course is primarily clinical based with didactic sessions, complemented by a research component.
As a postgraduate dentistry student, you will learn from expert oral health professionals and researchers as you study at the Sydney Dental Hospital. You will learn treatment options for a wide variety of patients with different malocclusions and age groups using full fixed appliances, orthopaedic appliances, temporary anchorage devices, surgical modalities as well as aesthetic applications (Invisalign and lingual techniques). As a capstone to your studies, you will complete a research project in the field of orthodontics under the supervision of an academic staff member.

The training in research component of this course will provide a basis for an academic career, which would involve further research training through a Doctor of Philosophy.

To apply for a PhD, you need to demonstrate sufficient prior research experience and capability. In most cases, you will have either: a bachelor's degree with first or upper second class honours or a master's degree performed at a high academic standard, and which includes a substantial component of research; an equivalent qualification that demonstrates research experience, excellence and capability. English Language Requirements: TOEFL - IBT score: A minimum result of 85 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing; IELTS score: A minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band; TOEFL - PBT score: A minimum result of 565 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing.

A successful applicant for admission to the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Orthodontics) will hold a Bachelor of Dentistry, Doctor of Dental Medicine or Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Sydney or equivalent institution; or an equivalent qualification that is recognised by the Australian Dental Board (Limited Registration for postgraduate training/supervised practice) and with a curriculum acceptable to the school.
Applicants must demonstrate commitment to the particular specialty that they are applying for, such as through participation in short courses or continuing education programs aligned to that particular specialty. In addition to these criteria, admission to this course requires:
at least two years general dental practice;
completion of the primary Fellowship Examination of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons or its equivalent is desirable;
all applicants must be registered with the Australian Dental Board for practice (limited registration for international candidates) prior to admission to the program.
TOEFL - IBT score: A minimum result of 96 overall including a minimum result of 23 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 25 in Writing
IELTS score: A minimum result of 7.0 overall and a minimum result of 7.0 in each band
TOEFL - PBT score: A minimum result of 592 overall including a minimum result of 5.0 in Writing
