The MA will provide you with advanced training in applied linguistics, whether you have a professional or academic interest in language and language teaching. It's particularly suitable for qualified students and trained teachers, who wish to enhance their understanding of theory and practice in language teaching, and enrich their professional practice. The course includes options to take part in work placements and gain additional professional qualifications. Students will also achieve PgDip award in this course. The School of English is ranked second in the UK for linguistics by the Complete University Guide 2017. We're recognised for our expert academic staff who offer research expertise and supervision in a variety of sub-disciplines. These include second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, English for academic purposes, materials design, testing, bilingualism, pragmatics, intercultural communication and critical discourse analysis. Our graduates go on to advanced careers in TESOL all over the world. They also work in business, publishing, translation and interpreting. Assessment depends on the module, but includes essay assignments and classroom coursework tasks. You’ll write your dissertation (MA only) over the summer. If you don’t complete the dissertation you’ll be awarded a diploma.
