Our Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, six year degree programme was established to widen access into the medical profession. The course has achieved national recognition as an example of best practice. It involves studying for an extra year before joining year one and studying alongside students on the BM5 and BMedSc programme. The BM6 programme leads to a qualification that allows graduates to register provisionally with the General Medical Council (GMC). You will undertake a research project in year three, leading to a final award of BMBS, BMedSc; and you have the option to intercalate to achieve a Masters in Medical Science degree. This programme involves studying for an extra year on a specially designed year zero course, during which you will receive extensive support. Year zero consists of modules on Human Structure and Function and Professional Practice, including day placements in primary or secondary care. On successful completion of year zero, you will join our BM5 and BMedSc programme. In the National Student Survey 2016, 93 per cent of our students agreed the course is intellectually stimulating and were satisfied or very satisfied with the learning resources. 85% were satisfied or very satisfied with the teaching of their course overall. We work closely with our students and have achieved an international ASPIRE Award of Excellence in Student Engagement (2014). With clinical experience from year one in a research-intensive university our integrated approach will help you develop the skills of a doctor, a scholar, a professional and a practitioner. This programme provides a comprehensive and balanced curriculum to enable you to develop the knowledge, skills and professional attitudes and behaviours that you will need as a newly qualified doctor. Following registration with the GMC, graduates can pursue a wide variety of career pathways.
