The aims of the programme are to provide you with: experience of, and the opportunity to gain expertise in, rigorous, leading edge research in an engineering and/or environmental science discipline; broad knowledge of the contextual background of your research problem in the general field of engineering and the environment; a sound understanding of the theoretical foundations of your chosen discipline and area of research; training in generic and transferable research skills; a high quality and intellectually stimulating experience of learning in a supportive, research-led environment; and communication and presentation skills through seminar presentations and production of a research proposal and dissertation. Written examinations, essays and coursework for the technical modules, a poster presentation and a seminar presentation for the generic modules, a one month research plan, a written review document and viva voce (with independent examiner) at 12 months. Having successfully completed the MRes programme you will have developed a range of intellectual, practical and transferable skills that characterise an engineer’s or scientist’s approach to research and scholarship, including the ability to: identify and collate information from a variety of sources relevant to a specific area of research and/or a particular engineering problem; interpret and critically evaluate information from academic papers, patents, technical manuals, government and industrial sources; and modify and apply existing theory in novel situations and circumstances.
