This course is designed to provide students with knowledge in two complementary disciplines, stressing the challenges posed by pathogens and how they shape immune responses. The MSc is offered in a school that has a very sound teaching and research base, with expertise in the host-pathogen interface. The ongoing interactions between the microbiologists and immunologists within the school will guarantee exposure to the forefront of research into host-pathogen interactions. The skills gained from this MSc Microbiology and Immunology will provide a solid portfolio of knowledge and practical skills at the host-pathogen interface, which will prepare for a wide range of career paths. MSc graduates from the School of Life Sciences go on to establish a range of successful careers. Many of them pursue a higher degree such as a PhD in very strong research laboratories in the UK, Europe or the US; others take up positions as trainee diagnostic microbiologists, immunologists or biomedical scientists (BMS); while others gain employment in industry such as large pharmaceutical companies or other private enterprises.
