This course focuses on Greek and Latin Literature in its cultural context. It examines different ways of reading and using literary texts across a wide range of authors, genres and periods, combined with opportunities for in-depth specialisation in a particular area. As well as learning about a range of methodologies and approaches, students will also be encouraged to explore responses to Latin and Greek literature in later cultures (from Neo-Latin epic to modern cinema). Students will have the opportunity to begin or continue an ancient language as necessary to bring their language skills up to an appropriate level for studying classical texts in the original. Students will generally be assessed through written assignments, as well as their dissertation. By studying a taught programme at master’s level, students will further develop their academic skills in terms of communication, presentation and research. Postgraduates of all backgrounds are highly sought after by employers because they are able to demonstrate a stronger skills set, so this course will prepare them for a wide range of careers.
