Systems engineering considers how to deal with complex integrated systems that influence so many domains in our society today (transport, health, finance, security, military, education, energy, etc). These can only be satisfactorily designed by considering the system in its entirety. To do this, a system engineer needs to look at all the component parts of a system while considering the systems lifecycle - from feasibility through to design, manufacture, operations, and disposal. It is the systems engineer’s job to integrate all the key elements in a system including hardware, software, firmware, people, information, techniques, facilities and services, to achieve the required system capability and performance.
The challenge of Systems Engineering MEng is to assemble the right knowledge portfolio. This will include Electronics, Mechanics, Programming and Software Design, Systems Methods, and even Aircraft Design. But you will also be exposed to subjects such as Human Factors and Understanding Complexity, with delivery from a range of academic Departments and Schools. Our IET and RAS accredited courses deliver a theoretical and practical skills set that will allow you to implement and manage complex inter-disciplinary projects through all their phases including specification, design, development and maintenance. This course is fully accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) depending on module choice.
Choosing to study Systems Engineering MEng will put you in a position to solve today's complex engineering challenges, such as design and development of aircraft, ships, automotive vehicles, communications networks and more. You will understand digital systems, electrical and electronic circuits, and control, as well as system integration, systems diagnostics and systems applications. This will allow you to develop careers in national and multi-national companies, defining, understanding and managing complex systems for consumer and industrial use, across many different industrial sectors.
Lecture based modules are assessed by a combination of coursework and formal examinations taken at the end of each semester. Project module assessments require written reports and technical presentations, preparing you for your subsequent career. The proportion of coursework assessment is approximately 30% to 50% depending on degree course, semester/year and optional modules.
