Most dust in the Earth system originates in the low-latitude dust belt, however recent studies suggest at least 5% of global dust emissions comes from sources in the high latitudes (≥50°N and ≥40°S). Dust sources in the low to middle latitudes have been well-mapped from a range of satellite studies but remote sensing has so far offered relatively little information on dust activity nearer the poles due to challenges of applying remote sensing methods at higher latitudes (Bullard et al. 2016). The aim of this PhD is to provide the first multi-scale, systematic, remote-sensing led quantification of high latitude dust sources, dynamics and transport pathways, providing an essential dataset for understanding the dust loading in these regions and validating future global dust modelling outputs. The student will use a variety of satellite data to identify and map the distribution and pathways of high latitude dust sources and events. These data will span a range of spatial and temporal scales and the satellite retrievals will be cross-references to multiple, independent, secondary ground-based measurements including meteorological data and aerosol databases.
