Manufacturing engineering is the discipline of turning raw materials into new products, and the research and development of new manufacturing processes, machines, tools and equipment. Manufacturing engineers manufacture products to the correct specification, in the right quantity, as efficiently as possible, anywhere in the world. Global growth of manufacturing industries presents a unique set of challenges to UK and international companies. Competitive edge and marketplace share require constant and agile investment in the latest manufacturing processes, research and development of frontier breaking new technologies, and the fostering of dedicated skill sets in many countries with diverse cultures and languages. This multinational business environment demands graduates who can demonstrate manufacturing technology and manufacturing management excellence. Manufacturing engineers are required to link directly to electronic engineers, materials scientists, mechanical engineers, product designers, and many others, turning design into reality but maintaining product functionality. Our Manufacturing Engineering BEng (Hons) degree is fully accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. On completion of the Manufacturing Engineering courses, students should have acquired a good understanding of the manufacturing and production skills and technology necessary to effectively fabricate new products. The courses provide an excellent foundation for graduates wishing to progress to professional engineering status. Students studying on the BEng course may have opportunity to change to the MEng course if their performance in the first and second year is sufficiently strong. The Manufacturing Engineering courses are broad based and cover a range of both manufacturing technology and manufacturing management topics, as well as an element of traditional engineering subjects. Throughout the three academic years of the courses, skills are developed across all of these areas. Our graduates are ideally placed to develop manufacturing engineering career roles across many different industrial sectors. The emphasis is placed on increasing your independence and encouraging you to develop your study skills while taking part in group activities. Lecture based modules are assessed by a combination of coursework and formal examinations taken at the end of each semester. Project module assessments require written reports and technical presentations, preparing you for your subsequent career. The proportion of coursework assessment is approximately 30% to 50% depending on degree course, semester/year and optional modules. By undertaking a year in placement or a year abroad, you will gain an additional award alongside your final qualification. If you complete an industrial placement year you will gain a Diploma in Industrial Studies (DIS). If you undertake a professional placement year you will gain a Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS) or if you study abroad for a year you will gain a Diploma in International Studies (DIntS).
