Manufactured products and services are developed and delivered through networks of producer supply and consumer demand. These supply networks can take a long time to design and implement before becoming effective in delivering what is required. Importantly, there exists great disruption potential due to forces external to the networks, in particular, uncertainty such as for example fuel disruptions, transport disruptions and socio-economic disruptions. There is increasing concern within research and operations management about how to deal with apparently increasing vulnerabilities and disruptions to manufacturing and supply chain operations. This is currently a hot topic in operations management and of great interest to industry. Although resilience has now been established, there is still much that requires investigating and operationalising for industry and business. This research project intends to look at the strategic concept of ‘dynamic capabilities’ (an approach that has not yet been applied to resilience) in order to determine practical frameworks and tools that could be used to increase the resilience of manufacturing organisations and their supply networks. This PhD research project will allow you flexibility to develop your own thinking, approach and research capabilities with supportive supervision and structure of the Technology and Operations Management Research Group.
