The aim of this research is to test the effectiveness of a peer group support physical activity programme for young women who have completed treatment for cervical cancer. The programme will be assessed using survey data, physical activity measures and qualitative interviews. Women with cervical cancer are unique because most are young (<40) and treatment can lead to infertility, early menopause, incontinence and pelvic pain. This can result in severe psychological distress, bladder/bowel/pain symptoms that limit activity and the anxiety of possible cancer recurrence. Physical activity is effective in reducing distress and improving wellbeing, however, cervical cancer survivors tend not to take part in physical activity because of pain/incontinence and confidence issues. The student will be working in partnership with the oncology team at Leicester General Hospital and with academic supervisors at Loughborough University. Travel between the two sites will be required.
