A challenge for sports equipment and sportswear companies is providing the most accurate advice for the prescription and engineering of sports equipment/sportswear to suit an individual based on their subjective, functional and performance requirements. Golfers, for example, purchase golf clubs to help improve performance, enhance the feel of a shot or reduce the risk of injury. Customisation of golf equipment or golf club-fitting is often based on performance or club/ball outcome measures, the benefits of which can be different between golfers due to their individual swing movement patterns. Individual movement patterns, quantified using biomechanics variables and analytical techniques, have been observed in runners. As such, some running footwear companies are striving to redefine the design and prescription of running shoes based on individual movement patterns. Golfers also exhibit individualised movement patterns yet understanding how these movement patterns are influenced by golf equipment requires investigation and forms the focus of this studentship. This studentship will appeal to students interested in studying human-sport equipment interaction, with a specific focus on golf, using biomechanical methods and analytical techniques.
