The mitral valve (MV) is a complex structure regulating forward flow of blood between the left atrium (LA) and left ventricle (LV) of human heart. It has multiple components and complex internal interactions. Multiple disease processes can affect its proper function, for instance, mitral regurgitation (MR). Recently, Mitraclip implantation is widely used as an approach, alternative to conventional open-chest surgery, to treat mitral valve regurgitation in high-risk patients. However, the clip implantation may induce some other problems due to the changed MV biomechanics. So it is important to understand the biomechanical behaviour of MV after mitraclip implantation, such as deformation and stress distribution on the leaflets in MV, for which the research is very limited according to literature. In this project, finite element method will be used to simulate the mechanical deformation and stress distribution of MV. The results will be used for the development of mitraclip. The candidate will join the vibrant Mechanics of Advanced Materials research group at Loughborough University. Material behaviour of mitral valve leaflets will be collected from literature and used as input for finite element simulations. In addition, fluid-solid interaction will be modelled to evaluate the MR after clip implantation. Simulation results will be compared with in-vitro experimental results in literature. The research outcome will serve as a driving force to boost the development of advanced therapies for heart valve diseases, especially for vulnerable patients such as ageing populations.
