The Analytical Chemistry MSc programme is designed to provide comprehensive training in analytical chemistry and its implementation in a variety of fields including biomedical, pharmaceutical, food and environmental analysis. Analytical chemists assess the chemical structure and nature of substances. Their skills are needed for a variety of purposes including drug development, forensic analysis and toxicology. Analytical chemists can specialise in areas as varied as toxicology, pharmaceuticals and forensics. Analytical chemists analyse samples using a range of techniques such as electro-chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography and spectroscopy. They are employed by a variety of public and private sector organisations, and can specialise in areas such as toxicology, pharmaceuticals, quality control or forensics. You will have access to a broad range of scientific instrumentation including: 400 MHz, 500 MHz, solid-state and benchtop NMR spectrometers, single crystal and powder X-ray diffractometers, a high resolution inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometer, GC-MS and linear ion trap LC-mass spectrometers, ion mobility spectrometers, gas and liquid chromatographs and tunable nanopore sensors. The MSc Chemistry programmes attract students from all over the world with students from a wide range of different countries including China, Nigeria, Oman, USA, UK, Brunei, Latvia and India. This programme also offered a PGDip and PGCert course. Our programmes were ranked above the sector average on all 9 units of assessment in the 2016 Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey. Graduates from the Analytical Chemistry programme have progressed to careers in a range of industries, and many go on to further study and PhD programmes.
