This course deals with two specific areas: the teaching of Welsh as a first language and the teaching of Welsh as a second language – according to the requirements of the National Curriculum and the specifications of external examinations (GCSE and Advanced Level). However, an emphasis is placed on the substantial ground that is common to both fields. The sessions are workshop-based. The main areas covered within the secondary school context are: the aims and objectives of teaching and learning Welsh and Welsh Second Language; Welsh and Welsh Second Language in the National Curriculum, GCSE and Advanced Level courses, and their role within the whole curriculum in secondary and tertiary education; preparing schemes of work and lesson plans; strategies to develop pupils’ oral, reading, and writing skills; the role of Information and Communication Technology in the Welsh/Welsh Second Language classroom; resources for the teaching and learning of Welsh and Welsh Second Language - teaching schemes, textbooks, sound tapes/videos, television programmes, DVDs, CD-ROMs, computer software etc planning for classroom management and organization; assessing pupils’ progress and attainment; promoting aspects of Welsh culture.
