A PhD research degree in English Literature gives you the chance to pursue a major project based around your own passions and interests, which should be of publishable standard. You will be supervised closely by two experienced academics in your field. Typically, you will meet your supervisor fortnightly in the first term and at regular intervals thereafter. There are no taught PhD classes, but – on request - you may attend MA modules if relevant to your thesis. At the end of year 1, you attend a progression meeting with your supervisors and the Director of Postgraduate Research to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of your research project. In your second and third year, you may send articles for publication in scholarly journals. From the second year, you may have opportunities to teach undergraduate tutorials and seminars, for which you receive training and payment. A thesis of not more than 90,000, which contributes significantly to the subject area and demonstrates original research. This is followed by an oral examination of the thesis (viva) by two examiners who are not your supervisors, one of whom is external to the University.
