This course provides graduates with a professional postgraduate qualification in social work. It is for people who have completed degrees with components of social and behavioural science. The course aims to provide graduates with knowledge and skill for professional practice in contemporary social work and human services and with a strong commitment to social justice and human rights. Students complete 12 academic units which include two fieldwork placements (Practicum 1 and 2). Students will be able to undertake these units, including the fieldwork units, within their regions. All UTAS social work students undertaking clinical or field education placements are required to undertake a national police record check. Other checks may be required by organisations such as for offences involving children. Students need to be able to meet the requirements of the UTAS Safety in Practice policy. Placements are offered in a range of social work agencies throughout Tasmania and applicants should be aware that they may be required to travel for at least one practicum. All travel and accommodation costs incurred during placement are to be met by students. Academic units may be studied on a full-time or part-time basis. The Practicum units are normally full-time although applications for part-time practicum will be considered by the Head of Program on a case-by-case basis. Course objectives This course provides graduates with a professional postgraduate qualification in social work. Upon completion of the course graduates will be able to: understand and critically assess key aspects of contemporary cultures and society and their relevance to the social work profession; employ relevant theories and skills for in-depth analysis and ethical engagement with individuals, families, groups, policies, organisations and communities across a range of contexts; demonstrate commitment to human rights, social justice, non-oppression and sustainable change; exercise skills of critical and independent thinking, reflection and judgement; demonstrate flexibility and engagement in solving complex problems and applying knowledge and skills to new situations and practice contexts. Professional Recognition The professional qualifying Master of Social Work is structured in accordance with Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) Accreditation and Education Standards 2010. Graduates from the MSW will be eligible for membership of the AASW which is a requirement for the employment of professional social workers in Australia and overseas.
