Introduction This programme introduces students to current directions of research in social anthropology. Drawing on the strengths of staff in the Department, it provides training in the conceptual and practical issues entailed in the conduct of research. Students receive guidance in how to access and use sources of research material (ethnographic, archival, visual and museological) and are trained in the fieldwork and research methods of social anthropology. Students also work with their peers at the Universities of Edinburgh and St Andrews through through the Scottish Training in Anthropological Research (STAR) consortium. Students completing the programme should be ready either to undertake further research towards a PhD in Anthropology or a related discipline, or to enter employment as researchers outside the university, for example in government, civil society organisations, museums, libraries, the media, or business.
