Introduction In this programme the focus will be on the relationships between sex, gender and violence. Questions underpinning the programme and core course include: How are gender, sex and violence inter-connected? In ways do they co-produce each other? Why does legislation against violence so often transpire as inadequate, perhaps especially in the case of gendered and sexual violence? As the links between sex, gender and violence appear intimate and often lethal, a central but not exclusive focus of the programme will be on theories and practices of sex/gender. We will also consider the different sites through which violence appears or can be seen, for example in popular culture or the production and enactment of masculinities. The focus will not remain on what we commonly understand to be sensational violence, we will also pay close attention to the brutal fecundity of violence through the banality of every-day ordinary violence. The degree works both as a stand-alone programme for students wishing to enhance their knowledge of this area to an advanced level, as well as providing the necessary foundation for students wishing to pursue a PhD in the social sciences.
