This course provides you with the opportunity to acquire advanced current knowledge in Microbiology. In addition, you will develop a capacity for independent research and problem-solving that can lead to workplace research and/or a degree by higher research (Masters or PhD).
Course objectives
At the completion of the course you will have:
established a strong understanding of a range of microbiological disciplines including food microbiology and safety, medical microbiology and microbial ecology;
developed analytical laboratory skills appropriate to various disciplines of microbiology research;
developed advanced skills in accessing, critically evaluating and communicating the outputs of current, peer-reviewed, microbiology literature;
developed skills and tools required to structure a funding application;
received research training in experimental design, critical thinking and research methods that facilitate the pursuit a potential career in microbiological research;
demonstrated the ability to produce an original written research thesis.

PhDs normally require the equivalent to an Australian bachelor’s degree with upper second class Honours or higher. English language requirements: IELTS of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0; TOEFL (Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language) - 92 (26 in writing and speaking, and 20 for reading and listening); PTE Academic 58 (58 for writing and speaking with no other score lower than 50); UTAS Access Level 7 English Language Training - 65 (65 for writing and 65 for speaking and no other test score less than 60); CAE (Cambridge Advanced English) - B (Equivalent to the Council of Europe level (CEFR) of C1 or above).

The Master of Applied Science may be completed in 3 or 4 semesters depending on level of qualifications on entry, and discipline preparedness of the specific candidate. Applicants must demonstrate their qualification(s) were conferred no longer than 10 years previously.
Applicants must have sound evidence in the application of laboratory skills to a standard set by the University of Tasmania.
3 Semester Prerequisites
Bachelor degree in a science field with a major in Microbiology.
4 Semester Prerequisites
Bachelor degree in a science related area, and some background (e.g. minor sequence) in Microbiology.
Most of our postgraduate programs including Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Masters by coursework degrees have the following English language requirements.
IELTS (Academic) - 6.0 (no individual band less than 6.0)
TOEFL (iBT) 72 (no skill below: Reading 16; Listening 16; Speaking 18; Writing 22)
PTE Academic 50 with no score lower than 50
UTASAccess-English Level 7 - 60% (no individual score less than 60%)
Cambridge CAE (Certificate of Advanced English) - B Grade
Cambridge CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) - C Grade
