This course provides you with advanced knowledge and skills in Environmental Management, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, and Geography. In addition, you will develop a capacity for independent research and problem-solving that can lead to workplace research and/or a higher degree by research (Masters or PhD). Society requires skilled people with the knowledge and capacity to provide innovative solutions to a complex challenges in environmental management – the use of spatial data and technologies is central to approaching these challenges over coming decades. Course objectives Graduate outcomes for this course: identify the complex relationships between scientific approaches to environmental issues and political, social, economic, and ethical perspectives on the environment; resolve questions in geography and environmental studies by ethical means, applying evidence-based knowledge and research techniques, including those associated with field work; be familiar with various sources of spatial data and methods of spatial data collection, understand key data quality issues, and understand the processes required to effectively import, manage, visualise, and present spatial datasets; understand the processes required to combine various sources of data for spatial analysis, and undertake spatial analyses in commonly used GIS and remote sensing software; demonstrate an ability to develop a research proposal and carry out independent research in environmental and spatial sciences; demonstrate research skills as practised by professional scientists, including scholarly review and critique, collaboration, practical field operations, data analysis and synthesis of results; communicate perspectives and knowledge in environmental and spatial sciences to specialist and non-specialist audiences using written, oral, cartographic, and other visual means.
