Introduction This programme of research (with provision for an extra year for write-up) by the end of which candidates should be able to demonstrate that they are capable of pursuing original research in Archaeology in a critical and scholarly way. The programme leads to the submission of a dissertation of up to 100,000 words, which should make a distinct contribution to knowledge and afford evidence of originality as shown by the exercise of independent critical powers. Current PhD students in the Department of Archaeology work on a range of topics applying laboratory, field, technical, methodological and theoretical approaches to the study of past societies, biomes and landscapes.
