The Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) is the vocational stage of training for those who wish to become a barrister in England and Wales. It acts as the bridge between the academic study of law and the practice of law, enabling you to move from the classroom to the courtroom. As the largest law school in the North East region we pride ourselves in offering excellent training to help you to secure pupillage and prepare you for life as a barrister. Throughout your course, you will use outstanding facilities including a dedicated legal practice library a suite of mock courtrooms and access to an impressive range of options, including the Student Law Office, winner of the Queen’s Anniversary Prize. By the end of the BPTC you will be equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary for a successful career at the Bar. Our teaching integrates research-rich learning through enquiry-based tasks, case analysis and engagement with legal research. The pervasive research culture of Northumbria Law School will facilitate your development of excellent research skills and a strong conceptual understanding of specialist areas of law. The Law School’s research is focused on three areas: Law and Society, Legal Education and Professional Skills, and the Centre for Evidence and Criminal Justice Studies. Your tutors will discuss their own and wider research as it relates to the course, enhancing your learning experience and encouraging critical thinking. On successful completion of the BPTC, you will be fully prepared for the demands of practice at the Bar and will be eligible for call to the Bar of England and Wales (subject to meeting the qualifying requirements of your Inn of Court). The Bar is recognised to be a demanding profession and there is extremely intense competition for pupillages.
