Mechanical Engineering will show you not only how parts, machines and systems work, but also how to design and analyse them. These systems could be a power station, a jet engine, a car engine, or even a household object – the emphasis is on energy and design. If you are on the MEng programme you will work on a group design project in the final year; recent examples include a performance assessment of Britain’s Olympic Bobsleigh and the testing of a combustor from a Rolls Royce micro-gas turbine. The degree programmes are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Mechanical Engineering at Queen Mary is offered as either a 3 year BEng or a 4 year MEng. Both degrees are accredited by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, which means students can progress to chartered engineer status (CEng). The BEng and the MEng degree are identical up to the end of year 3. Students with an overall average mark of greater than 60% at the end of year 3 are able to progress onto the 4th year of the MEng degree. Throughout the degree, course material is delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials, laboratory practicals, problem-based learning and a variety of coursework. In addition, students undertake two major projects: an individual research project in the third year and a group design project in the 4th year (see separate pages for more information). In the recent National Students Survey (NSS) Mechanical Engineering was ranked 5th in the country and the best in London. Course materials are delivered through a combination of lectures, problem-solving classes, laboratory practicals, problem-based learning and a variety of coursework. In addition, students undertake two major projects: an individual research project in Year 3 and a group design project in the fourth year of the MEng programmes. The student-led projects are frequently sponsored by industry and provide a valuable insight into real-life engineering design and project management. Graduates from Queen Mary’s School of Engineering and Materials Science go on to work in a wide variety of careers. Some apply their degree knowledge directly, entering careers such as aerospace engineering, manufacturing or hi-tech industries, whilst others transfer skills gained during study into areas such as consultancy, IT, or finance. Recent careers events in the School of Engineering and Materials Science include a large employer and alumni networking forum and a weekly timetabled careers slot in which large and small employers provide information, advice and skills training. Last year over 100 companies and alumni came to speak to students from this school including Transport for London, Rolls Royce, BAA, EADS Astrium, Bose, Microsoft, Siemens, De Puy, Selex Galileo and Jaguar Land Rover.
