This course will provide students with a clear understanding of the scientific basis underlying the principles and clinical practice of oncology and the development, evaluation and implementation of new treatments. This will be underpinned by a thorough knowledge of cancer biology and pathology, drug development and research methodologies. This knowledge will provide you with a good grounding in the clinical practice of oncology which will enhance prospects for those pursuing a clinical academic career. This programme provides comprehensive training in research methods, coupled with access to first class research laboratories in one of the UK’s leading cancer research institutes. Study and contribute to the latest developments in curing cancer, such as novel drugs and gene therapy. You will have the opportunity to undertake a three-month dissertation under the supervision of one of our research experts, this may involve setting up a “mock” clinical trial to gain experience of the real world of clinical research and drug development in the cancer setting. You will play an active part in your acquisition of skills and knowledge. A variety of teaching and learning methods will be employed including; seminars, laboratory practice sessions, self-directed learning, one–to-one tutorials, case presentations, reading lists of books and journal papers. You are assigned an Academic Adviser who will guide you in both academic and pastoral matters throughout your time at Queen Mary.
