This course is for those who like to pursue a managerial role in factory operations. This master’s course is designed to meet that need, developing multidisciplinary production engineers capable of designing lean and competitive manufacturing facilities and delivering operational excellence. The overall aim of the course is to advance your abilities within the area of production engineering and operations management so you can assist manufacturing companies to meet these demands head on – achieving competitive advantage and making an impact on profits and sustainability. We will encourage you to systematically and critically evaluate engineering design and process choices around materials, production technologies and production processes. You will then design solutions to complex production engineering and operations management problems using 3D computer solid modelling and the latest industry standard software, interfacing with current leading production machines. Assessment is achieved through coursework assignments (100%), which could involve design, analysis and experimentation or computer simulation. They may include written assessments, presentations, posters, oral examinations and formal reports. Assignments may be individual or involve group work. The learning outcomes of modules, assignments and projects will be clearly stated in advance and your work will be marked according to how well you achieve these learning outcomes. You need to achieve 40% or above to pass. On completion, you should be able to: formulate innovative solutions to real-world problems and challenges with incomplete data through an ability to synthesise current and leading-edge knowledge; evaluate the limitations of current and emerging products and technologies against both technical as well as commercial constraints; and design creative solutions to current and emergent problems by taking a holistic technical and non-technical perspective, including commercial and sustainability concepts.
