This course aims to provide an understanding of the many challenges faced by the oil, gas and energy industry. We focus on the interpretation, evaluation and communication of legal issues which may arise in a wide range of circumstances, including risk management, international business, the environmental impacts of the energy industry and corporate social responsibility. Taking into account the dynamic nature of the energy industry, this LLM aims to cover the practical knowledge and skills required for the legal management of oil and gas exploration and production activity. The course will be assessed through a combination of formative and summative assignments. Summative assignments will comprise of a 4,000-word written piece of coursework, in the shape of a report or research assignment, depending on the nature of the module. The formative pieces will be used to prepare you for the final piece; these can take the forms of presentations, small written pieces or a combination. While these will be essentially practice pieces they will be just as vital. On successful completion, you should be able to: demonstrate a sound understanding of: the role and rules of law in the oil, gas and energy industries; the emerging legal principles and concepts as they apply to the oil, gas and energy industries; the international context within which the law operates; research techniques and sources of law used to investigate and analyse the law relating to oil, gas and energy; and critically evaluate legal and other materials in the presentation of oral and written arguments, including the acquisition of advanced citation and referencing skills.
