This course seeks to produce postgraduates with the versatility and depth of understanding to deal with new and unusual challenges in mechanical engineering, alongside the necessary imagination and creativity to innovate. An internationally recognised qualification, this master’s course is informed by our commercial and academic research in areas such as vehicle dynamics, light weighting, advanced simulation and future concepts. It is designed to equip you with relevant, up-to-date skills and knowledge to work as a mechanical engineer in a broad spectrum of mechanical engineering business activity management, research, design and development roles. Assessment is achieved through coursework assignments (100%), which could involve design, analysis and experimentation or computer simulation. They may include written assessments, presentations, posters, oral examinations and formal reports. Assignments may be individual or involve group work. The learning outcomes of modules, assignments and projects will be clearly stated in advance and your work will be marked according to how well you achieve these learning outcomes. You need to achieve 40% or above to pass. On successful completion, you should be able to: develop and test strategies for engineering products involving appropriate instrumentation, experimental methods, and data analysis techniques; manage people, processes and engineering projects to promote the commercial success of an engineering enterprise; model and analyse innovative engineering systems using appropriate engineering science and mathematical analysis techniques, such as analysis of aerodynamics, thermodynamic cycles, control systems, stress and dynamics; and synthesise solutions to innovative engineering design problems.
