Are you an environmental practitioner who is concerned about the risks (human and ecological) associated with environmental pollution and wants to be involved in providing creative solutions to minimise those risks? The University of Newcastle’s Graduate Certificate in Pollution Impact Assessment can be the pathway to that position you’ve been dreaming of.
Providing you with specialised training in pollution impact assessment, this industry-focused program will help prepare you for your dream job.
Using a balanced approach that includes both hands on and case studies, you’ll examine the core concepts, principles and techniques underlying environmental risk assessment. You’ll learn how to assess a contaminated site including following guidelines for contaminated site assessment (e.g. NEPM-ASC) and jurisdictional legislation regulating management of contaminated land; carry out desktop research for preliminary site investigation (PSI), develop a conceptual site model (CSM), produce a sampling plan for a detailed site investigation using data quality objectives (DQO’s) and evaluate contaminated site data to identify contaminants fate and pathways and assess the risk presented by the contaminant(s) detected on site.
On completion, you’ll be able to understand the principles underpinning risk assessment and be ready to apply your new knowledge as environmental practitioner or continue developing your career.

International students, a four year bachelor degree including a significant research training component attained at a high standard, is commonly considered equivalent to an Australian honours degree. Other English Language Requirements accepted: Pearson Test of English (PTE) score of 57 with no score subtest score less than 50; Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) score of 52 - 57; TOEFL paper based test 525 min of 4 in TWE. Additional requirements: Applicants with ATAR of 90 or above are also eligible.

Admission to the program will be based on student’s academic qualifications and or relevant experience in the environmental remediation industry, as follows:
A three year Diploma or Bachelor degree (AQF Level 7) in an Environmental Science discipline (or cognate discipline): or
A three Bachelor degree (AQF Level 7) in a field other than Environmental Science (non-cognate discipline) with a minimum of one year relevant industry related experience; or
A three year Diploma (AQF Level 6) in an Environmental Science discipline (cognate discipline) with one year relevant industry experience; or
A three year Diploma (AQF Level 6) in a field other than Environmental Science (non-cognate discipline) with two years relevant industry related experience; or
A two year Diploma (AQF Level 6) in an Environmental Science discipline (cognate discipline) with three years relevant industry experience; or
A two year Diploma (AQF Level 6) in a field other than Environmental Science (non-cognate discipline) with four years relevant industry experience; or
At least five years industry experience.
English language requirements: TOEFL score of 550 in TWE (Test of Written English) minimum of 4.5 in the paper-based test; TOEFL internet based score of 93 and no subtest less than 21; IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 no subtest less than 6.0; PTE score of 64 with no subtest less than 59; CAE score of 58-66; ELICOS Exam[i] score of Higher Level Pass 4 (HP4) in EAP exam; CPE score of C Pass.
