The Bachelor of Business will give you a broad understanding of Australian and global business environments. You will gain practical skills and attributes that are highly valued by employers in a range of disciplines including finance, accounting, economics, politics, marketing, leisure and tourism, the legal system, industrial relations and statistics. Our business graduates go on to exciting, stimulating and lucrative careers in the private, government and not-for-profit sectors in Australia and internationally.
What you will study
When you study a Bachelor of Business you will establish a firm understanding of the contemporary business environment and undertake studies in a range of disciplines. You'll have the opportunity to select from eight majors.
In your first year of the business degree you will complete subjects from a broad range of disciplines. This initial year of business studies gives you a strong grounding in business principles and equips you with a set of core business development skills before you choose your major. You will develop skills in the following areas:
Accounting, management, law, marketing, microeconomics, finance, business decision making
In the second and third years of your business degree, you'll undertake courses relevant to your chosen specialty. Each of our eight majors provide specialist skills to succeed within that field.
Entrepreneurship and Innovation
The entrepreneurship and innovation major incorporates a practical industry placement and gives you the confidence and skills to launch exciting new business ventures. This major can lead you to a career in consultancy or management, creating success and maintaining value, across a range of organisational structures.
Governance, Policy and Political Economy
Business graduates of tomorrow need skills and knowledge if they are to be equipped to manage the complex challenges of a twenty-first century globalised economy. The governance, policy and political economy major will provide business students with an understanding of the broader political environment at both a national and international level where all business activity is inevitably located.
Human Resource Management
Employees are often an organisation’s most important assets. Human resource management links people-related activities to business strategy. Studies in human resource management will provide you with the broad-ranging skills and knowledge needed to respond to an ever-changing and dynamic business environment.
International Business
When you major in international business at the University of Newcastle, you develop the skills needed to operate in a rapidly changing worldwide marketplace.
Leadership and Management
When you study a leadership and management major, you will develop a comprehensive understanding of the complex structure and operations of organisations, while also developing strong planning and leadership skills.
Marketing
Marketing is about understanding and communicating with customers as well as delivering goods and services that provide value. As a marketer, you will match the needs of customers with the offerings provided by an organisation. This is critical to the success of both profit-based and non-profit organisations.
Tourism
A major in tourism management prepares students for an exciting career in the fast growing global tourism industry. This major examines the complexity of contemporary tourism in Australia and internationally, and emphasises the importance of sustainable tourism development for long-term economic, environmental, and sociocultural viability.

Other English Language Requirements accepted: Pearson Test of English (PTE) score of 57 with no score subtest score less than 50; Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) score of 52 - 57; TOEFL paper based test 525 min of 4 in TWE. Additional requirements: Applicants with ATAR of 90 or above are also eligible

Admission to our undergraduate degree programs usually requires successful completion of a senior secondary school qualification similar to the Higher School Certificate (HSC). They must also satisfy any one of the following English proficiency requirements whose first language is not English: TOEFL score of 525 with a TWE (Test of Written English) minimum of 4.0 in the paper-based test; TOEFL internet based score of 80 and no subtest less than 20; IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 no subtest less than 6.0; PTE score of 57 with no subtest score less than 50; CAE score of 52 - 57. Students from different countries should have qualifications equivalent to Australia.
