This fascinating course covers a wide variety of subjects, including the architecture of great houses, their economic and political importance, their gardens and landscapes, the furniture within them, their collections, and their representation in literature and film. During the programme, you will have regular opportunities to take part in activities and field trips to complement teaching through seminars and lectures. The course has a strong vocational content and you will take part in guided study visits to museums and galleries at houses in the locality such as Lamport Hall, Boughton House and Kirby Hall. The Centre for the Study of the Country House's joint venture with Lamport Hall will provide you with the opportunity to take advantage of activities such as an annual guest lecture. You will be become familiar with multi- and interdisciplinary postgraduate study and will be taught by a team of staff drawn from the University of Leicester's History of Art and Film, English and History departments who are not only passionate about their teaching, but are also at the cutting edge of research in this area. The MA will equip you the skills to undertake further postgraduate research on the country house and is also ideal for those working or intending to work in the heritage industry, museums, auction houses or tourism.
